There is a lot to like about the Ford Focus Active hatch, based on Ford’s bigger new focus hatch.

Click here to search Midway Ford Stock to see if there are any Focus Active available for sale.

The vehicle is in a class of its own almost literally, when asked about it Ford doesn’t classify it as an SUV, crossover or hatchback.  It does though have raised ride height (30mm front and 34mm rear), wheel arch and body cladding, under body bash plates and a range of traction modes for slippery surfaces.  Which allow it to impersonate a Crossover type SUV. The car is however exclusively front wheel drive, but works brilliantly with the Independent rear suspension the focus is famous for.

The real suprise is the Performance this car packs it is absolutely a pleasure to drive.  Powered by 1.5 litre 3 cylinder turbo charged petrol matched to an 8 speed automatic transmission.  Producing 134 kW of power and 240 Nm of Torque, and incorporating cylinder deactivation ( dropping a cylinder when appropriate ) this gives a combined fuel economy of 6.4 litres per 100 km.

The extra ride height doesn’t undermine the cars agility and road holding passed down from it rally inspired origins.  The steering is balanced fun and responsive Making this quite a pleasure to drive.

The car performs well in the safety department receiving the highest 5 Star ANCAP rating with standard kit including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning and a 180 degree Reversing Camera with sensors.

Some vehicles are optioned with Safety Package, which includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear- Cross Traffic Alert, Blind-Spot Warning and Lane-Centring Steering.

The interior is well presented without an overly complicated cockpit, You also get an 8 inch touch screen with SYNC 3 infotainment (including Apple CarPlay and Andoid Auto), wireless phone charging and a rotary control dial for the transmission which is something to get used to.  There’s decent boot space for luggage with 375 litre which expands when the rear seats are folded down to 1354 litres .

The Focus Active is almost in a niche category of its own, Its not a competitor to Cross over vehicles per se, but is a curious car that preforms well for Some one who leads an active type lifestyle but is predominantly city based driving.
