2020 Ford Mustang R Spec

September 10, 2020

The supercharged Mustang R-Spec represents attainable super-car performance

The Ford Mustang R Spec was limited and only 500 units were produced for the Australian and New Zealand market, all of which were sold within 24 hours.  Or so the rumour would go, how ever if you are looking to buy a brand new R Spec mustang straight off the showroom floor and your reading this very article ‘you’re in luck !’.  Midway Ford still have one of these units available for sale when this post was published.  But get in touch quickly cause once it’s gone they are extinct as a new car purchase ‘so to speak.’

Any back to the car itself, every R Spec was fitted out with a six speed manual transmission, there were no automatic versions offered, making this a purists dream.

If your looking for a sports/super car the Mustang R Spec represents excellent value for money.  It closest competitor in the Chevrolet Camaro will set you back an additional $60 000 over the Mustang starting price, before on road costs.  So that’s over 1.5 times the cost to get a car with equivalent performance.  That’s a bargain by anyone’s standards.

Ford has upped the ante inside the Mustang R-Spec when compared to the regular GT model.

Our stock vehicle is  optioned with large bolstered sports seats made by Recaro, a name synonymous with racing and performance. They are wrapped in premium black leather, completing perfectly the super car feel of the cabin, and are well worth the additional cost.  You do miss out seat heating and cooling with this choice.  The circular gloss black and white gear knob is a very nice touch complementing nicely the super car feel of the interior.

The Dash board directly in front on the driver has a 12.5 digital instrument cluster that is configurable with a large ranger of options.  It even has a drag racing mode that can set the rev counter to assist you with completing perfectly timed shifts.  Every thing is presented in a clear, large easy to read format.

Sync 3 is the centre infotainment system of Ford’s choice and features smartphone integration with both Apple Carplay and Android Auto.  Sound is catered for by a high end Bang and Olufsen 1000 watt stereo with 12 speakers and a sub woofer that’s well integrated into the boot so not to impinge on load area.

Under The Hood

So here’s what you will find underneath the Bonnet of this Potent Pony, a 2.65 litre super charger feeding the familiar 5.0 litre V8 in the regular Mustang GT v8.   Ford hasn’t released any official power figures for the R Spec mustang but a similar model released in the United States produces more than 500kw of power, with torque figures in excess of 800 Nm.  The performance is animal-istic, and gear shifts are like a more expensive and exotic car.

The car is still easy to drive as a regular daily driver however to fully appreciate the pure power and ability of the car it needs to be taken to the track.  This is a car that really needs to be driven to be appreciated.  And lets be honest who cares about economy, If you buying a true performance car you not going to be overly fussed with its environmental footprint or average fuel usage.  The official combined fuel economy figure is 14.0 litres per 100km, which isn’t bad for a performance exotic.

The performance package is fully warranted by Ford Motor Company and Herrod Performance  for 5 years , you can breathe easy and expect not to have any grief during your ownership.  Keeping in mind it is a highly tuned performance car you would make sure to follow closely the Manufacturer’s guide to breaking the car in, and regular maintenance and up keep
