Toyota Australia Ahead Of Schedule Takata Airbag Recall Expansion

August 30, 2019

Toyota Australia will recall an additional 1,541 vehicles built between 2014 and 2016 ahead of schedule. This campaign involves Yaris sedan and Rukus models that have been installed with faulty Takata airbags. These vehicles were previously included in future Takata recalls scheduled for either 31 January or 1 April 2019.

In involved vehicles, the airbag is faulty and it could kill or seriously injure you and other people in your vehicle when it reaches six years after its year of manufacture.

There is no immediate known risk with the airbag but there will be in the future.

As the airbag gets older, a combination of high temperatures and humidity can affect airbags with the fault.

If you are involved in a collision, the airbag can go off with too much explosive force, causing sharp metal fragments to shoot out and kill or seriously injure people in the vehicle.

In this recall, these affected Takata airbag inflators will be replaced with parts produced by an alternate supplier. Parts for this ahead of schedule Takata airbag recall expansion are already available to commence replacement.

Affected vehicle owners will be initially notified by mail and asked to take their vehicle to their closest/preferred Toyota dealer for repair.

Replacement of the front passenger airbag inflator assembly will take approximately one to two hours. However, depending on the Dealer’s work schedule, it may be necessary to make a vehicle available for a slightly longer time.
All rectification works will be carried out free of charge.
