About unsafe2safe

Buying a newer, safer car can be costly, especially for young drivers. Under unsafe2Safe up to 1000 eligible young, regional Victorians will receive a $5000 subsidy to purchase a newer, safer vehicle from a participating car dealer. Qualifying participants, selected at random, will be asked to trade in their existing older, unsafe vehicle. The car will be scrapped meaning we won’t transfer the safety risk to another person.

Why are we doing this?

Recent research tells us younger drivers in regional Victoria are over-represented in the number of lives lost each year and are 15 times more likely to be killed in crashes involving older vehicles than the state average.

Technology has evolved over time, and modern life-saving safety features like auto emergency braking, side curtain airbags and electronic stability control can save lives in a crash, and many of these modern features are common in newer cars.
