The New Golf Mk8

June 17, 2021

Volkswagen Australia says that the Golf 8 is ‘The evolution of fun’ and will take you out of everyday life and into a world less ordinary. With semi-autonomous driving, unparalleled performance and a striking new design, all of us at Brighton Volkswagen know that this new icon was made to have fun.

But don’t just take our word for it…listen to what the experts have to say…

Golf 8 is an exceptional vehicle, which, in so many ways, is exactly what we expected. It feels high quality, solid, well put together, and comfortable. It’s also easy to interact with, practical, and engaging to use for longer, regional drives. There’s little doubt that the Golf has always punched above its weight out in the cut and thrust of the real world. The new Golf 8 carries on that tradition with class, despite the understated nature of its execution. We can’t wait to test the new GTI.  https://www.caradvice.com.au/959561/2021-volkswagen-golf-review/

At this moment in history, as consumers shift to SUVs and electrification, the combustion-only Golf 8 range proves Volkswagen means to make the most of its legendary nameplates before their time comes. It’s true, there are some relatively minor changes here when it comes to the engine, platform, and even styling, but the Golf’s tech-heavy cabin, expansive range, and ultra-refined driving characteristics allow it to well and truly assert its position as the benchmark of the hatch segment. https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-reviews/volkswagen-golf-83806

While the Volkswagen Golf is pricier than before, it still stacks up well against its competition (especially against its Skoda rival, funnily enough) and packs more standard equipment than the old car. That the IQ. Drive suite of technology is standard from the base level is commendable. There’s also still that basic Golf goodness, with a polished ride/handling balance and a smooth powertrain that is none the worse for having dropped the dual-clutch auto. The Golf has long been a benchmark in the European C-segment plus a consistent top-seller. A higher base price and increasing movement to SUVs over here in Australia may dent Golf sales but the Mk8 should still be at the top of your list if you’re in the market for a circa-$35k hatchback. https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-reviews/2021-volkswagen-golf-review

This is the safest and most tech-laden Golf yet … The push upmarket with the 2021 Volkswagen Golf Mk8 is most evident inside the cabin. It simply bristles with the fitment of its two new digital displays, while also introducing a centre fascia and dashboard that significantly reduces the number of buttons and switches in the cabin, creating a cleaner, more upmarket ambience. Even the fly-by-wire gear shifter has been miniaturised to create more room up front, bolstering considered storage options and cubbies across both passenger rows. All told, we’re a fan of the new layout. Not only does it raise the bar for small hatch presentation, it is also surprisingly user-friendly. https://www.motoring.com.au/volkswagen-golf-2021-review-130422/

The Golf now has a conventional eight-speed automatic similar to those used by BMW and Volvo in their small cars.  It’s a smoother unit in town, without the occasional stop-start hesitation that plagued the old dual-clutch unit. The flip side is that shifts that aren’t quite as crisp at full throttle, though a sports mode and shift paddles help address that. The engine continues to deliver effortless shove while being quieter than non-turbo rivals. Hushed at motorway speeds, the Golf has a fine ally in well-judged driver aids that make highway driving a more relaxing proposition without becoming a nuisance. The new car’s faster steering and slightly firmer suspension also contribute to an involving hatch that represents one of the best driver’s cars in its class. Tauter than some alternatives, the Golf’s superb accuracy and consistently weighted controls deliver a polished drive. It’s a confidence-inspiring car that makes a strong argument in favour of conventional vehicles as opposed to teetering SUVs that pitch and lurch through corners. https://www.news.com.au/technology/motoring/new-cars/2021-volkswagen-golf-review-new-small-hatch-shows-its-class/news-story/387a7fa4499ca1ae7ab69dee317d1b72

At Brighton Volkswagen we have to agree with Newscorp when they say that the Golf Life is the ‘new benchmark small car’.
