BOOT SPACE

In theory you would think that the bigger the vehicle the bigger the boot capacity. Ironically, the smallest storage areas are often not in the smaller cars like you’d expect.
Car boot space can be compromised by genre. Convertibles use the boot space to stash the soft-tops, leaving little room for anything else, and even the larger 4WD’s can lack the all important storage space because they need to accommodate the extra seating option.
When you consider what you use your vehicle for most often – groceries, weekend sports run, school bags – it should come as no surprise that vehicle manufacturers try to optimise the storage capacity as much as possible. Unfortunately though, some cars just lack that extra boot space you need.
Here we look at some smaller vehicles and what they offer or lack in cargo space:
Abarth 500 – 185 Litre
Only available as a three-door and with a pretty small boot, the Fiat 500 remains one of the smallest cars on the road. Although parking may never be a problem, storage may be a struggle with a tiny 185 Litre boot.
Nissan Micra – 235 Litre
Full of personality, this five-door hatch is super affordable, a breeze on maintenance, and a genius on fuel, but it lacks good storage with a 235 Litre boot capacity.
Holden Barina Hatch – 290 Litre
Fresh and modern from every angle, the Barina is both sophisticated and economical but with a mere 290 Litre storage you might find it a tight squeeze when it comes to cargo.
Hyundai Accent – 295 Litre
The Accent creates a sporty look and combines sharp performance and exceptional economy for people who are on the move however with a 295 Litre boot capacity the Accent lacks necessary storage space.
Ford Focus Hatch – 316 Litre
In terms of capacity, the Focus’ boot size is poor. At 316 Litres it is no match for some of its similar class counterparts and if you take the option of a full-size spare tyre, that figure drops even further to a mere 277 Litres.
Hyundai i30 – 378 Litre
This versatile hatch was an instant hit when it burst onto the scene in 2007. Combining European styling and offering a 378 Litre boot storage the i30 has become an Aussie favourite.
Volkswagon Golf Hatch – 380 Litre
This proven family hatchback has a classy interior and packs a big boot at 380 Litres.
