VEHICLE FINANCING

Chances are that if you are looking to purchase a new vehicle, you may need some form of financing to help pay for it. To make the process as smooth and painless as possible, here are some tips that can help when looking for vehicle financing.
Budget
The first thing to figure out is do you have a budget, what that budget is and how much you can afford each month? When calculating the numbers, remember to allow for other expenses as well. Vehicle maintenance, registration, insurance and running costs should all be considered when working out your budget for a vehicle. You should also allow some financial breathing space for any unexpected costs that life may throw at you.
Other things that you are planning on saving for both in the interim and in the future should be taken into account as well. Let’s face it, it’s no good having your dream car sitting in your driveway if what you are really wanting is a holiday overseas or a new flat screen tv. If you set you limits and are realistic about your vehicle budget, there is no reason why having a car loan and a healthy savings account can’t go hand in hand.
Where to Start
Prior to speaking with finance companies, it is a good idea have all you paperwork in order. If you are a private buyer you will need to supply documentation that proves your income, such as bank statements and payslips.
Another thing to consider is if you are thinking of undertaking a balloon or residual payment at the end of a loan period. If you are thinking of doing this it is important to remember not to set this too high. Although it may help reduce your monthly payments it could lead to problems down the track. For example if you’re looking to get a replacement vehicle at the end of the financial period, and the residual is higher that the vehicle’s re-sale figure, you will be out of pocket.
As with home loans, weighing the relative cost of competing financing options is not just about comparing the interest rate. Considerations must be taken when looking at the account keeping fees, establishment costs and any other sundry charges that may pop up.
