Why is the Ford Puma the 2021 Best Light SUV?

We say that Ford’s funky little SUV (Ford Puma) is the best in the light-SUV segment, but why?
Since announcing our 2021 Drive Car of the Year Awards, we’ve had plenty of readers ask what the standout features were on the each of the winners, detailed points which set them apart from not only other cars in market, but the other finalists in the category.
Casting your mind back to April 2021 when we announced the outcome of our inaugural Light SUV category, the new Ford Puma was up against the equally fresh Volkswagen T-Cross, Nissan Juke and Hyundai Venue.
All represent stylish, compact, urban-friendly highriders, and all have performed well in showrooms so far this year, but the Puma took the award by leading the finalists in one key area.
It’s fun!
The 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine offers a modest 92kW and 170Nm, but when paired with the seven-speed DCT and nimble 1288kg body, the little Puma feels far more sporty and entertaining than it’s size and price positioning would suggest.
It’s an excellent drivetrain which provides good urban and touring economy (combined claim of 5.3L/100km), as well as zip and engagement to keep you entertained behind the wheel.
On top of that, you get a generous amount of standard equipment, even in the entry level ‘Puma’ Puma, which includes satellite navigation, support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB digital radio, puddle lamps, wireless phone charging and a full driver assistance package.
The boot offers flexible configuration and storage options, and it just feels very well built and solid for a range-entry car. We will say the rear passenger room is a bit tight for adults though.
