Berwick Mazda joins Bunjil Place as presenting partner of Opera Australia’s Madame Butterfly

February 26, 2019

Berwick Mazda has joined forces with Bunjil Place as a presenting partner for an unlikely love story in the City of Casey. Madame Butterfly is a love story that reaches across cultures, across oceans, and across time.

What is Madame Butterfly?

Puccini’s popular opera ‘Madame Butterfly’ is sung in English, was created in 1903, but was actually originally produced in Italian.

The Opera has since inspired the well-known musical Miss Saigon. Filled with gorgeous music, from the lovers’ first rapturous embrace to the intense finale, it features the famous aria ‘One Fine Day’ and the Humming Chorus, along with Japanese and American musical themes.

The love story surrounds U.S. Naval officer B.F. Pinkerton, who is ashore in Japan, enchanted with its beauty and freedoms. He decides to take a wife, and when the gorgeous geisha Butterfly arrives, he is transfixed by her charms. She falls hopelessly in love, and a passionate marriage begins.

Years later, Pinkerton returns home. Abandoned by her family, Butterfly waits faithfully for her husband to return

What will Opera Australia’s performance be like at Bunjil Place?

Nestled under the wings of Bunjil Place in the new 800-seat capacity theatre, one of Australia’s greatest theatrical minds, John Bell, will direct this English-language production, complete with beautiful costumes and sets.

Opera Australia’s wonderful singers will perform with a chamber orchestra, along with a children’s chorus, drawn from our local community, including Berwick’s own Melbourne Youth Chorale.

Berwick Mazda is thrilled to be Presenting Partner of Madame Butterfly at Bunjil Place.
