One of the most revered learner approved sport bikes on the market, the Ninja 400 delivers excellent performance for value.

Ideal for commuting or carving the twisty mountain side, the Ninja 400 takes elements from other models in the Ninja range, and then adapts and refines them for a 400cc package. So what makes Kawasaki’s Ninja 400 so appealing to the Australian market and how has it become one of the most appraised leaner sportbikes?

Starting with the power and chassis, the Ninja 400 uses a 399cc liquid cooled 4 stroke that produces a maximum peak output power of 44 hp at 9500 rpm and a maximum torque of 38 Nm at 8000 rpm. The engine offers performance at all rpm’s, especially in the low to mid range. New riders won’t be intimidated by the power, as the engine revs smoothly and the power delivery is linear. Paired with a light weight and agile handling chassis, it allows new riders to feel comfortable and in control of the bike at all times.

Ergonomics are welcoming and accessible. Riders are in a relaxed position, with the handle bars and foot pegs offering an upright, sporty position. The seat is well cushioned and the wind shield does surprisingly block a large portion of wind (depending how tall you are). Although riders are in an upright riding position, you still feel tucked on top of the bike, giving a sense of aggression and sporty characteristics.

Stylising is a huge reason why this bike has seen great success. Boasting futuristic Ninja styling inspired by the mighty Ninja H2, the large-volume bodywork attracts attention, and gives the impression of a larger machine. Headlights are loud and sharp, amplifying bright LED lights, allowing great visibility and safety on the roads. Again, inspired by the Ninja H2 and Ninja ZX-10R, the Ninja 400 has chin spoilers at the bottom of the front cowl.

Rocking the same instrument cluster as the Ninja 650 (2019 Model), the high-graded feel of the 400 is further explored in the tidy cockpit. A sophisticated instrument design features a large analogue tachometer flanked by warning lamps on one side, and a gear position indicator and multi-function LCD screen on the other. Personal highlight is seeing that gear indicator. It’s a small addition, but will drastically help learners.

Overall, this is a fantastic leaner sports bike. After all, you’d sure hope it would be, as it’s based off the highly adored and appraised Ninja 250R and 300. Kawasaki continues to deliver exceptionally valued beginner bikes, allowing new generations of riders to enter the market with the latest and greatest innovations in motorcycling.
