Harley Davidson® Key Fob Explained

April 30, 2021

Harley Davidson’s® key fob security system is no new technology, yet many people don’t actually know too much about it.

Waterproof, remote controlled and utilising state of the art rolling code technology, the fob acts as a proximity key, allowing riders to simply jump on their Harley’s®, and start the engine without inserting a key in the ignition. Implemented for convenience and as an extra security feature for your pride and joy, the fob uses smart security system technology that can sense when the owner is around the bike. This automatically deactivated security features, enabling owners to roll and start the engine.

Say that you are mid-way through a ride and end up misplacing your fob. When setting up the system, users will need to create and remember a PIN number. The PIN will allow you to start your engine, even without your fob present. This PIN can be changed to your preference at any time, simply follow instructions in your owner’s manual.

If the fob isn’t present and an individual decides to move the bike, the signal lights will start flashing until it is disarmed by the PIN or the presence of the fob. If not, the lights will continue to flash until the battery drains, and on some bikes a siren will be activated. To neutralise the security features, owners can switch their bikes into “Transport Mode” which allows the bike to be moved, without the PIN or fob, and won’t set off the security system. This is especially handy when transporting the bike in a truck or trailer.

Step by Step Process – Activating Transport Mode

    1. . With the configured fob in range, turn the ignition switch to IGNITION
    2. . Before the security system lamp goes out, turn the ignition switch to OFF
    3. . Within 3 seconds, simultaneously press both the left and right turn signal switches

After which, the bike indicators will flash once, and the bike will be set to “Transport Mode”.

For older bikes that don’t have this technology, the key fob can be bought and added in as an aftermarket accessory. Pricing of the fobs will vary slightly between different year models, however generally the key fobs will be sold singularly at $74.95 AUD and configured to your specific bike at $75 AUD. It is worth mentioning that owners that forget their PIN, must go to a Harley Davidson® dealership to get this reset.
